Virtuous v1.0.1 Sense/DZ









This project is a collaborative effort between rmk and eViL D:


Virtuous is a custom ROM for the HTC Vision series of phones (G2, DesireZ, etc). The goal is to provide a simple, Sense-based, mostly-stock ROM based on the official Desire-Z Sense ROM with essential bug fixes and only subtle enhancements. Virtuous started on the HTC Droid Incredible and is currently one of the most popular ROMs for that device. Virtuous for the Incredible has over 6000 users with an established reputation for stability; which we intend to continue for Vision users.


ROM Details:

* Based off the official DesireZ Sense ROM v1.85.72.2, deodexed and zipaligned.

* Sized to fit on the G2 system partition, without any partitioning or HBOOT changes.

* Pre-rooted with the latest version of Superuser and modified ramdisk to allow adb remount, mock locations, etc.

* Wifi calling included and fully functional.

* Optical trackpad unlock/wake.

* Custom built kernel based on official HTC sources, including support for overclocking, CIFS, NFS and Tunneling (VPN). See post #2 of this thread for more detail on our kernel setup.

* Updated versions of all Market-available apps.

* Moved all Market-installable apps to /data/app. These apps are automatically installed for you both on initial install and after a factory reset/wipe. There are custom scripts to use Android's package manager (pm) to manage these apps, which ensures they are installed properly.

* Official Swype included, since it is licensed for the G2.

* G2 button (.com/www) set to behave as TAB.

* Added applications: ChromeToPhone, Google Voice, Titanium Backup and Quickboot. Since these are Market apps, they are automatically installed in /data/app for easy removal if desired.

* Disabled boot animation audio.

* Added the bash shell for those who work in adb or ssh into their phones. Just run "bash" to use it (it is not the default shell for compatibility reasons).

* Automatic Virtuous OTA upgrade notification and installation via ROM Manager.

Installation:

1. You must be perm rooted with and Clockwork Recovery installed (i.e. s-off).

2. Perform a nandroid backup of your current ROM, in case you change your mind or encounter issues.

3. If you are coming from another stock Sense ROM, you may not have to wipe data. I obviously recommend wiping data (since it will eliminate any possibly bad/stale configuration), but the update script will not do so automatically during installation. Use your best judgement to determine what works best for you.

4. Wipes are NOT required for any upgrade to/from any release with the same major version of the ROM; downgrades are a different story. Versioning schema is Major.Minor.Revision.

5. Apply the zip via Clockwork Recovery. It has not been tested with any other recovery.

6. Expect the first boot to take anywhere from 6-10 minutes. Subsequent reboots should be significantly quicker.

7. After initial install, allow a few minutes for all ROM-provided applications to appear. Some are installed post-boot using package manager.

Kernel Options

Beginning with Virtuous 0.9.0, we will be providing two distinct kernels for Virtuous: standard and advanced:

Standard kernel:

* Provided by default with Virtuous.
* Performance locked, SetCPU profiles will not work (intentionally).
* Default minimum frequency 245Mhz.
* Default maximum frequency 998Mhz (i.e. safe "out of the box" overclock).
* Built-in screen off profile with maximum frequency 368Mhz.
* Ondemand default governor, limited optional governors.

Advanced kernel:

* Available as a separate download.
* No performance lock, SetCPU usage recommended.
* Overclocking support up to 1.49Ghz.
* Default minimum frequency 245Mhz.
* Default maximum frequency 998Mhz
* No built-in profiles whatsoever.
* Ondemand default governor, interactive and smartass governors available.


Discussion regarding the "advanced" kernel will be moved to a new thread dedicated to kernels. Many of you will be asking why we are going this direction. The answer is that we find ourselves more focused on discussing kernels in the ROM thread than we should be. Also, many problems being reported are self-inflicted by those less familiar with the implications of setting various options.

In short, the idea is to provide a ROM that "just works" out of the box and let more advanced users tweak as they please. Keep in mind that we will be expecting any ROM-specific issues/bug reports to be confirmed while using the "standard" kernel. In other words, we're not going to troubleshoot SetCPU and overclocking issues anymore in this thread. That'll be the purpose of the kernel-specific thread.
